Being pregnant for the 2nd time was to be thought as “easy breezy”. However, that was far from true. I had not planned for this pregnancy, so I had a lot of anxiety about the challenges of being pregnant again and dealing with my first child. As well as the challenges of taking care of two children. There are so many positive aspects of having Stephanie as my doula, she was by my side through it all either by phone, text or in person. I didn’t know much about a doula but became quickly informed and educated by her. She was very informative when answering all of my questions and special requests. She had a lot of patience with me, she took her time in explaining the process of a doula, especially when I didn’t understand and most of all she encouraged me to be open to different options when preparing to deliver my baby girl at the hospital. Actually, I had no idea that I could make certain requests that she suggested. I thought before that I could do this on my own but I quickly became surprised to know all the benefits that came with a doula before, during and after my pregnancy, with that being said I felt so much more at ease to embrace going through the pregnancy process all over again. I felt emotionally supported, spiritually supported, physically supported, mentally supportive and I wouldn’t have changed a single thing about my choice to have a doula. Having my supportive husband by my side was very good, however, having a female do that also by my side especially during my delivery made me feel relaxed and reassured that everything was going ok. She also clearly explains the positive aspects of having a doula, as my husband did not understand and wasn’t clear on what a doula does. She reassured him that she wouldn’t take his place but only would support me and us in the needs that we both wish, and this was very respectfully she did this.
In the preparation of my delivery at the hospital she was completely focused and wanting to be sure that the hospital staff was listening to my wishes and requests during my time at the there, especially during the delivery. She was also very knowledgeable in baby delivery areas, such as proper medication they would be giving me, the medical monitor screens and helped me understand medical terminology. To add, she also supported me in providing help with my son at the hospital on the day of my delivery, she took the time to keep him distracted and calm when I was in the room and while my husband was offering me support as well. This was a real benefit because we in no way wanted our son to feel left out or not attended to but we wanted him to be apart of this process and excited to have a new baby sister, an addition to our family. She also taught me the benefits of breast-feeding, the best nutrition tips to produce milk and the proper latch for a baby and how to breast-feed especially in the beginning, this was very informative and reminded me the importance of breast feeding in the earlier months after giving birth. Not only did she help me during my delivery but has also been very supportive after my delivery, as I was quite overwhelmed in the beginning and being at home by myself with two kids while my husband was at work. She offered advice and different tactics to stay calm when stressed out or overwhelmed and reminded me to take time out to rest when I had spare time. I appreciated all aspects of having a doula and I would definitely advise any pregnant woman to think about having one because there are so many benefits that come into play.
